SENATOR GEORGE MCGOVERN WILL BE AT THE BOOKMARK ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24 AT 7 PM TO TALK ABOUT AND SIGN COPIES OF HIS BOOK “WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A DEMOCRAT”.

Senator George McGovern will be at The BookMark on Friday, February 24 at 7 pm to talk about and sign copies of his book "What It Means to Be a Democrat". Forty years ago, Richard Nixon routed George McGovern in a presidential election that forever changed our view of American politics and cemented the powerful differences between the Republican and Democratic parties. Today, as the chasm between left and right has widened in Washington, McGovern passionately argues for a return to Democratic core values. In this new book, the former South Dakota senator laments that the GOP and increasingly centrist Democratic politicians have forgotten their commitment to compassionate policies that meet the needs of the many, not of the few. As the political campaigns for President of the United States heat up, this book takes on even more importance both for Democrats and Republicans.

George McGovern, the Democratic Party's nominee for president in 1972, served in the House of Representatives from 1957 to 1961 and in the Senate for 18 years. He was president of the Middle East Council for 6 years and U.S. ambassador to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture. McGovern holds the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service as a bomber pilot in WW II and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for humanitarian activities.

As well as promoting the beautiful Atlantic and Neptune Beaches, Every Third Thursday of the Month, merchants work in tandem with artists providing a venue to show and sell original art work. Guide maps are available at each participating business. The North Beaches Art Walk encompasses the area from Sherry Drive in Atlantic Beach; going eastward towards the beach; around to Neptune Beach side, and up to Third Street. It includes the Atlantic Beach Cultural Center.
